The reality

Reading Difficulty Is the Rule, Not the Exception

Between 70–80% of people with poor reading skills are affected by dyslexia, making it the most common learning difficulty globally.

That means millions of users don’t just “prefer” different reading experiences - they need them to function effectively online.

And yet, most digital products still assume:

  • Fast reading
  • High text density tolerance
  • Standard typography works for everyone

For many users, this leads to fatigue, frustration, and early abandonment.

The challenge

The Web Doesn’t Sit Still

W3Lexie was designed as a Chromium-based browser extension, meaning it had to work across any website, instantly.

But modern web pages are not fixed documents. They are constantly evolving systems where:

  • Styles are loaded from multiple CSS sources, sometimes asynchronously
  • Additional formatting appears dynamically via CDNs after page load
  • Entire sections of content are rewritten in real time by JavaScript frameworks

For users with reading difficulties, even small changes can break readability.

This means the extension cannot simply “apply a style.” It must:

  • Continuously observe the DOM
  • Detect changes as they happen
  • Reapply transformations without disrupting functionality

In practice, this is less like styling - and more like real-time adaptation of a moving system.

What we built

Turning Real-Time Complexity into a Simple Experience

Despite the complexity, the user experience remains straightforward.

With W3Lexie, users can instantly:

  • Improve text clarity and spacing
  • Adjust visual presentation for easier reading
  • Maintain control across any website they visit

Behind the scenes, the extension ensures these changes remain consistent even as the page evolves dynamically.

Technical Solution to Help Readers With Challenges

At its core, W3Lexie is a Chromium browser extension that adapts any website to the user not the other way around.

It allows users to customize typography using Omoguru’s specialized fonts, while adjusting line height, spacing, colors, backgrounds, and text size to match their individual reading needs.

Beyond visual adjustments, it introduces a focus mode that removes distracting elements like links and ads, helping users concentrate on the content itself.

It also adds a practical layer of interaction by enabling users to capture text directly from web pages and save it as structured quotes inside the Lexie web application.

All these features put together create a tool that puts focus on individual reading needs of the user and allows them to experience web content in a way tailored for them.

The outcome

Making the Web Work for Real Users

W3Lexie enables users with reading difficulties to navigate the web more comfortably, consistently, and independently.

The result is:

  • Reduced cognitive load when reading
  • Increased time on page and engagement
  • A more inclusive digital experience across any website

Most importantly, it challenges a common assumption:

The web doesn’t fail because users can’t read. It fails because it wasn’t designed for how they read.
